The Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners cordially invites the public to join us in celebrating Black History Month at the 4th Annual Black History Month Reception. This special event will be held at the Gadsden Arts Center & Museum, highlighting the theme "African Americans and Labor", which honors the significant contributions of African American laborers to the development and growth of Gadsden County.

Scholarship Awards Ceremony:
The Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners, in partnership with the Gadsden County School Board, will award $500 scholarships to students who participated in the County’s inaugural Black History Month Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Future Art and Essay Contest. The contest encouraged students to explore the importance of African American laborers, and the top essays from students in grades 4-12 will be recognized during the event. -
Black Women Artists Exhibition:
Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the Black Women Artists exhibition, featuring artwork from the Gadsden Arts Permanent Collection. This exhibit showcases the expressive and unique art created by self-taught African American women artists. Featured artists include:- Alynne Harris
- Bessie Harvey
- "Missionary" Mary Proctor
- Mary T. Smith
- Ruby Williams
The exhibition highlights the artists’ personal stories, cultures, family traditions, and the materials they used, many of which were found objects.
Guided Field Trips
The exhibition also offers free guided field trips for groups of four or more. These enriching trips provide hands-on art experiences and are available to children, adults, and seniors. Children and their chaperones can attend free of charge.
