Welcome to the Gadsden County Black History Month Page

February is a month dedicated to honoring the incredible contributions, achievements, and cultural legacy of the Black community. Join us in celebrating Black History Month throughout Gadsden County as we host a series of engaging events and activities that highlight the rich history of Black Americans in our community and beyond.

Celebrating Black History in Gadsden County

As we reflect on the past, we also look forward to inspiring future generations through education, celebration, and community engagement. Commissioner Eric Hinson, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, shares, “February marks a special time when we come together as a community to celebrate Black history, honor the trailblazers of the past, and inspire future generations.” This year, we invite everyone to take part in a variety of events to acknowledge the profound influence of Black culture, heritage, and history.

Learn About Black History on this Page

This page provides information on how students from Gadsden County can take part in the County’s inaugural Black History Month Artwork and Essay Contest. It also highlights the 45th Annual Gadsden County Black History Parade, featuring the world-renowned FAMU Marching 100, information on Florida's Black Firsts, the Black Heritage Trail, the Gadsden Arts Center, and Museum's Black History Exhibit, and a comprehensive Calendar of Events, so you won’t miss any of the celebrations happening throughout the month.

2025 Theme: African Americans and Labor

This year’s theme, African Americans and Labor, explores the transformative impact of labor—whether free or unfree, skilled or unskilled—on the experiences of Black Americans. From the agricultural labor of enslaved Africans to the significant roles played by Black communities in labor movements, this theme highlights how work has been at the heart of Black history and culture.

We invite you to learn, celebrate, and engage in the deep and lasting impact that Black Americans have had on Gadsden County, the United States, and the world. Thank you for visiting, and be sure to return to explore more of Gadsden County’s rich Black history throughout the month!

Let’s come together and make this Black History Month a time of reflection, celebration, and unity.
